Hello World!

This blog has been writing itself in my head for a long, long time. We are a family of 4 that loves to travel.  The only thing is, my husband is in a wheelchair as a result of a complete spinal cord injury (motorcycle accident many years ago). We have always shared a love of travel and although having twins a few years ago has slowed us down a little, we have been on some amazing trips over the years. I wanted to share our experiences with others as I know how difficult it is when you are travelling in a wheelchair to find places that have all of the amenities you need in order to be comfortable.

I know that everyone has different needs, so when you read my posts, you should know that my husband is a T3 complete paraplegic with full use of his arms and body above the nipple line. This means there may be certain things he can do or places he can go in his manual wheelchair that would not work for someone who uses an electric wheelchair or who does not have any use of their upper body.

I will do my best to post pictures that demonstrate accessibility or accessibility issues in the various places we have been. If you have any questions about any of the places we have travelled, we would be happy to try to help. We know how frustrating it can be trying to get your questions answered by someone who has never seen the room and has no idea what a shower bench is!

Lastly, if you have any comments about great places you have been, please share them! We are always thinking about and talking about where we want to go next and would be happy to hear about others’ experiences.

Happy travelling!

  1. Awesome! I am looking forward to your blog. I have both Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis so getting around can be a bit of a problem for me as well. I’ve discovered that using handicapped hotel rooms helps with my mobility issues!

  2. Your experiences are going to be so helpful to so many. I hope that the resort and hotel owners are reading as well so that improvements can start happening. Everyone should have the opportunity to travel and enjoy our amazing world. Great job!

    • Thanks! I agree that everyone deserves the opportunity to travel and enjoy the world we live in. I also agree that most resorts and hotels could stand to make some improvements to better serve people with mobility issues. Any time we experience significant issues somewhere, we try to communicate them to a manager so that they are aware of the changes that need to be made. The good thing is, most places are very receptive and they want to make it better – they just don’t know what needs to be done until someone brings it to their attention.

  3. Love your blog! This is really helpful for my husband and me. The first thing when planning a vacation for us is to check out the bathrooms! I’m glad to see your family traveling. Seeing the world is one of our favorite things as well. The one cruise we went on was fabulous.

    • I am glad that you are enjoying the blog, Lesley! It is the same for us – bathrooms are the make it or break it part of each hotel room. What cruise line did you go with when you cruised? We are always curious to hear what the different cruise lines are like. Happy travels to you!

  4. This is great. My husband is a T-10 paraplegic (also from a motorcycle accident). We were married in June of 2017 and decided to wait to take a honeymoon. We are hoping to go this summer and are working with a travel agent to find a perfect spot to relax with the accessibility piece as well. My husband is a manual wheelchair user, too and is pretty good about transferring, popping down curbs and stairs and making do with little challenges. All this to say, I’d still like to find a place that is easy for him to get around, and doesn’t cause a huge scene (much like the plastic covering over your carpet on the cruise, haha). Again, thanks for sharing your “good, bad and ugly.” I love it!

  5. Thank you for sharing your findings. I have Rheumatoid disease with arthritis and muscle problems being just two of the symptoms of it. I have just started to use an electric wheelchair for distance and just returned from a cruise that I wish I could’ve used it more often. I was thinking that I wish I would’ve known about a travel blog for wheelchair users! Here you are!
Thank you for your detailed reviews.
